Recent Red-Carpet Commentary: Jennifer Aniston, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ali Larter and Others
A couple of recent red-carpet looks and my thoughts on each…
We all know I love Jennifer Aniston’s style–and this look is no exception. I think this black Nina Ricci dress is super cute, flirty and fun. And while she’s five minutes away from being too old to wear it, I think she looks fab. (Not the hugest fan of the shoes however.)
Ali Larter had a baby around the time Kai was born. And needless to say, she looks AMAZING–it’s hard to believe she gave birth just six months ago. I think she’s gorgeous–and while I don’t love her dress, I think her hair and makeup look great. And I covet her shoes.
Yikes! Usually I’m a huge fan of Herve Leger dresses–in fact, if I had the figure to wear bandage dresses, I’d live in Herve Leger. But this isn’t working. Perhaps the dress is a size too small? And the top part? All wrong. (She does have great hair though.)
Ashley Greene is almost always photographed wearing red lipstick but in this photo, she’s wearing a sheer pink gloss–and it looks amazing! Greene is gorgeous but at times I’m distracted by what feels like heavy makeup. And this is a refreshing look for her. Check plus.
Selena Gomez is only 18 years old but she’s one of the best dressed celebrities this year. She always looks classy and cute. I can’t wait to see how her style evolves and pray she avoids the path previously taken by Miley Cyrus.
Pippa Middleton’s maid of honor dress at the Royal Wedding was drop-dead gorgeous–but she’s yet to hit another high note (in my opinion.) Until this little black number. Middletown looks super cute in this Tania black knit dress. Young, flirty, fun… perfect. I wonder if it’s a fluke or if she’s back on track…
Katie Holmes Nails It in Midnight Blue Dress
I already wrote about this dress for Popeater.com, but I loved it so much I thought I’d give it some extra love on the Hot Pink List.
The basics:
Dress: Contrarian
Shoes: Lanvin
Bracelet: Lanvin
This dress is gorgeous and Katie looks sensational in it. The color is great, the shoe color is perfect and her hair and makeup complement the whole look very well.
Check plus, Mrs. Cruise, check plus.
***My very hip and stylish friend Ann Marie just told me this dress is available at Singer 22 in lavender. The price is surprisingly just $381!
Haute Look: Kate Middleton and Her Burberry Trench
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but nothing’s inspired me quite as much as the Burberry Trench Kate Middleton was spotted in at an official engagement with Prince William. This wool trench with frilled hem makes me wish I didn’t live in tropical weather!
I’m OBSESSED with the flare at the bottom — so fun and flirty! I’m a big, big fan of this overall look. Apparently this coat sold out in most sizes one day after she was photographed in it — I’m not surprised. It’s gorgeous. The look is fresh from the label’s spring/summer 2011 line.
This wool coat isn’t cheap at $995 BUT no one ever said Burberry trench coats were cheap! Check it out at Burberry’s site here.
What do you think? Do you like it?
Celebrity Check Plus: Jennifer Lopez at Apollo Awards in NYC
Last night Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Antony received the Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis Arts and Humanitarian Award at the Apollo Theater Spring Benefit Concert & Awards in New York. And blah blah blah… what mattered was her dress! It was hot!
The gold, sequined number with a plunging neckline and curve-hugging fit was absolutely stunning. Her hair and accessories were perfect too. Loved the shoes and bag. (Update: Thanks to Libbey’s sleuthing, I can report the designer is Gianfranco Ferre.)
Check plus, Jennifer, check plus. (I actually really like her.)
‘Sex and the City 2’: The Red Carpet Report
A few weeks ago, the stylish ladies of Sex and the City 2 walked the red carpet for the premieres of their film–once in NYC and once in London.
With so much of the film about fashion, I thought we’d take a quick look at the different dresses the ladies wore to each–and pick which one looked best.
Sarah Jessica Parker
So, I actually love both of these dresses. The neon yellow gown is Valentino and fits her perfectly. I also really like how it plays off her loose blond hair and perfectly done makeup.
But. I mean. Really. How absolutely amazing is the Alexander McQueen dress she wore in London? It’s unreal. It’s just spectacular. Yes, the hat is a little much but it’s Sarah Jessica Parker and Sex and the City and if you can’t wear a hat like this to a premiere like this, when can you? But seriously, this dress might be top 10 favorite dresses I’ve ever seen. Obsessed.
Winner: Black Alexander McQueen dress and Philip Treacy hat
Kristin Davis
Anyone that knows me is aware that I prefer it when women, particular celebrities, wear their hair down with red-carpet dresses. I realize it’s less formal and blah blah blah, but I always think it adds some glamour to a look. Anyway, given that intro, can you tell which overall look I like better? The gold Norman Norell halter dress is heads and shoulders above the pink one, in my humble opinion. The pink vintage Jean Desses gown is just a little too pink for me. She looks good in it — better than most would — but it doesn’t have a ‘wow!’ factor at all. And with the swept-back hair, it’s just a bit too pepto-meets-severe for me.(But I do like the shoes she wore with the pink.)
Winner: Gold Norman Norell gown
Kim Cattrall
The slinky, form-fitting gold Naeem Khan dress Kim wore in NYC is stunning. In fact, the night of the premiere, I thought she was the best dressed of the four ladies. And a few weeks later, I still agree. This dress fit her perfectly and her old Hollywood hair and makeup perfectly accented the overall look. As for the black Vintage Thierry Mugler, I think it’s fine. It, too, fits her well but it also seems a bit plain. After the va-va-voom dress in NYC, I would’ve expected something dropdead.
Winner: Gold Naeem Khan dress
Cynthia Nixon
I’ll be honest: I’m not crazy about these. Well, let me be more specific. I think she looks pretty in both dresses but neither really grabs your attention. The black Carolina Herrera is gorgeous–the gold embellishment at the top is nice and it fits her body really well. It’s just a little….. safe. And the blue… yikes! The bodice doesn’t seem to fit her very well and it’s just not that flattering to her bust. The color is fine and daring but overall, I just can’t buy into it. The hair’s interesting though.
Winner: By default, the black Carolina Herrera
Overall, there were some great looks (we miss you Alexander McQueen!), some decent looks, and only one subpar dress. My favorite overall is the (can you guess?) McQueen Sarah Jessica rocked in London.
And for all you remembering how amazing these four women looked at the much-hyped first Sex and the City premiere, here’s a photo:
NYC 2009:
(Okay, so maybe only Sarah Jessica and Kim looked amazing but MY GOD, how awesome is Sarah Jessica’s dress?!?!)
London 2009:
(Another hat! And Cynthia, you should have worn that again!!)
And the Funniest Woman (and Author) in the World is…. Chelsea Handler
Chelsea Handler is quite possibly the funniest woman on the planet. After reading her books and watching her ridiculously awesome TV show for many months, it’s time for me to sing her praises. I read her first book, My Horizontal Life about two years ago. This absolutely hysterical book chronicles Chelsea’s one-night stands of years past. She’s irreverent, honest, and blunt. Three of my favorite personality traits in another woman. Last year, she released her second book, Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea. Awesome title, incredible read. It’s a great collection of short essays/observations. I read it on a plane and literally starting crying I was laughing so hard. People stared as tears ran down my face–it’s THAT funny.
Chelsea just released her third and latest book a couple months ago: Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. I read that on a plane too. Same thing happened: Laughing out loud, tears running down my face, lots of looks from strangers. It’s another collection of stories from her life. While I assume she’s exaggerating in many of her recollections, you can’t help but picture these things really happening to her. It’s just amazingly funny.
In addition to her books, her daily show, Chelsea Lately is top notch comedy. The way she interviews people is just awesome. She’s blunt, calls everyone on their shit, and does it without offending anyone. There is no one else in the world I’d rather get a cocktail with then Chelsea Handler.
Buy her books. Trust me.
Best Dress of the Oscars: Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta
Cameron Diaz looked HOT last night at the 82nd annual Academy Awards. Her golden and glittery Oscar de la Renta gown was stunning and her hair and makeup complimented it well. This was a more traditional dress selection for the usually-a-little-more-risky Diaz, but she nailed it.
I’m always a bit of a sucker for a strapless cut dress, but this just fit her so well. Stylists and celebrities just can’t go wrong with Oscar either. Her make-up artist and hair stylist both get high marks too – her long and flowing hair looked GREAT and I loved the red lip.
Other dresses I loved:
Carey Mulligan looked super cute in her black and crystal Prada dress. I liked the strapless top paired with gorgeous earrings. I also didn’t hate how the front was a little shorter than the back/train. Super cute overall.
Demi Moore was stunning in her Atelier Versace gown. I usually don’t love this type of chiffon, flowy dresses but I think the tight bust really makes this feel tailored. This fits her perfectly and I think her dark hair really sets off the color well.
I’m not a fan of Kristen Stewart’s sense of style generally, but I think she wowed last night in her navy blue Monique Lhuillier dress. She looked like a girl! Yay! I thought it was gorgeous and even though she looks uncomfortable (as usual), it’s still a beautiful dress.
People who missed:
This just didn’t work for me. I appreciate that John Galliano likes to take risks in creating his fashions, but this didn’t work all around: the color, the bust, the train.
That all said, I liked her hair and makeup.
I was so excited to see what Nicole Richie would wear… and was disappointed when I saw this. She’s so tiny — and this is too much material. I like the sparkle, but it’s just too heavy for someone her size. Plus, she’s young – I wish she’d worn something more indicative of her age.
